Day 3 Xmas Project

Phew!!  Today was so busy that I barely had time to think.

We opened today at 10am but people started arriving at 8.30am and lining up out the front of the church. We opened the doors at 9.50am and within the first hour we had 103 people through and a steady stream throughout the day. The total of people who came through the doors for the day  was 413 so that is 413 families we helped out for Xmas. People left with their 15 items of food and 5 gift type items and so many came back to personally thank us for helping.

We have started to run out of food so the girls from Anglicare ran around to the local shops and started to ask for donations and luckily we picked up a few hundred dollars worth of food for tomorrows opening. We had volunteers and people everywhere, the church was crowded, volunteers were run off their feet helping people select things, it was chaos but organised chaos.

I am unsure what today (as I am typing this at 5.30am Thursday morning) but if yesterday was any indication we are in for another busy day and hopefully there will not be too much to pack up tomorrow.

Xmas Event

Things are progressing (well almost ready lol) for our Xmas event. I am planning on taking lots of photos so you can all see what is going on day by day.

This is some of the food we already have just waiting til next Tuesday when we can lay it all out ready for people to come along and select what they need. From reports we have had back from various charities we are expecting around 600 - 700 people (GULP!!) so this will be a huge learning curve for me, or is that a challenge for me lol  So stay tuned and watch for pics to be uploaded starting next Monday night

What I am doing in between organising ....

I was given an old brown wooden doll's cradle and decided it would look much better painted white. So out came the paint brushes and after a couple of hours I had a white painted cradle and a mattress and quilt and pillow for a baby doll to lay their head on.

I then decided that while I did not have time to take on a large knitting project I could at least do something small, so out came the knitting needles and an afternoon of knitting and watching tv (a rarity these days) I managed to produce a teddy!!

Things are going well with our Xmas function with all the organising almost done (or as much that can be done prior) and everything seemingly in place. Just 13 days to go!!

Needy Stitches won an Award!!!!

Well this is EXCITING news!!

Needy Stitches won the "Community Spirit" award through the Bendigo Bank in Carrum Downs!! We won a statue trophy, a certificate AND $5000!!!  I went to the award ceremony last Wednesday and collected our winnings and was so excited knowing that now our Xmas project will have plenty of toys to give away to kids that need them!

It is only with the help of all of those who send me beautiful items to give away to those that need them that has made Needy Stitches a success!! So THANK YOU!!

Our Xmas project is coming along in leaps and bounds with a lot of parcels arriving every day and even a few money donations for me to go and buy more toys. We are starting to visit the local charities and have received very positive feedback and support so that is making out lives a bit easier.

Once again thank you to all those who support me in this.

Busy .. Busy .. Busy

The Xmas Project for this year is really taking up so much of my time. Trying to co-ordinate everything, getting rosters fixed as well as opening and sorting through the many. many parcels that have been arriving is an enormous task BUT well worth it.

I have been receiving loads of parcels of gift type items, stationary, toiletries and toys (some of the most beautifully knitted and crocheted toys I have ever seen) that I am now starting to overload the garage (as if that is something new LOL)

It is really amazing what can be achieved whenpeople band together in a single project!!

THANK YOU LADIES (and Men)!!!!!!

Next Meeting For Xmas Project

Our next meeting to discuss the Xmas Project is Thursday, 18th October at 1pm at the Church of Christ, 130 Cranbourne Road, Frankston.

We are progressing very well with lots of parcels coming in with lots of different things in them. I have received Mens underwear and T shirts, Baby jackets, lots of  mini Xmas stockings, toiletries, stationary, kids cardigans and jumpers and blankets!! Also a few ladies have sent me Coles and Safeway gift cards which I have spent on food so my stash of tinned goods is starting to add up!!! Thank you to all you ladies who have done this as it makes my life so much easier.

I have drawn up a roster so we can cover all that needs to be done during the week of November 26th and December 1st so if you or some of your friends want to help email me at and I will add you to the roster. You do not have to do a full day as I have cut the days up into 2 hour blocks so you can help for a couple of hours, a couple of days or the full week if you want to. The more hands the merrier!! (And less work for us all lol)

I plan to take tons of pictures and load them on here so you can all feel a part of what is going on and get someenjoyment in knowing the people you have helped!!

This year for our Xmas Project we are attempting something not only new but a little adventurous!!

Throughout the year I have been saving various items that have been sent to me so we can give a helping hand to those that need it at Christmas time.

Needy Stitches in conjunction with the Church of Christ are going to put on a Reaching Out to the community day where we have people that need a hand select items for them to give to their kids and families for Xmas. Some of the items we already have include Quilts, Toys, Blankets, Baby packs, School packs, Toiletry bags, Toiletry gift packs, Balls, Backpacks, stationary packs and so much more that I cannot think of right now LOL

We will also be supplying food. Instead of making up food hampers people can take up to 15 items that they eat rather than get something in a food hamper that they do not like. I think this is a much better way of doing it.

Those that attend this will need a Centrelink card and have to be referred to us by a charity so we can try and limit the people who do not really need help.

We think we will be able to cater for something like 600-800 people and it is only by the hard work and selflessness of our members we are able to do this. So many people give of their talents, time and energy to make items and post them to me.

Last week we had out first meeting where around 20 Ladies and 1 Man turned up to offer their support and also their time to make this even a success. We made some good headway on how we feel this should be run so now the hard work begins.

I have also had a lot of emails and phone calls from people offering their support by donating toys and items for this even and donating “wish Cards” from Safeway or Coles so we can buy more food.  If you work for a company that has advertising merchandise (like caps, t-shirts etc) perhaps you could ask them for a couple of items. A couple of things from a lot of companies would give us a lot more things to give away.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who are supporting us in this, it is only with your generosity that we can pull this off. It is amazing that a group of people from all over Australia are banding together to help so many less fortunate people.

Xmas Plans Revealed

Every Xmas it seems that there is more and more need out there not only for kids toys but for food hampers, gifts for Mum or Grandma, gifts for kids of a homeless person that they have not been able to give something to in quite a long time. Some of the stories I hear at Xmas are heartbreaking and for the past 2 years I have been trying to come up with something more we can do.  I tossed this idea around in my head last year but I was unprepared and xmas was fast approaching so I decided that I would rethink it this year.

I have been putting aside some things as they come in and have quite a good stash already for xmas so I have decided on what we should do.

The local church that has supported our group for a couple of years are allowing me the use of their hall for 1 week in the last week of  November. I am going to decorate the hall in a Xmas theme, lay all of the things I have been putting away all year out on tables (including quilts, blankets, kids toys, baby clothing, baby blankets, school packs, toiletries ... you get the idea) and those that come to us through the various organisations we already support can take what they need for Xmas. The church along with us will also be making up Xmas hampers like we did last year and giving these out to those who need them.

I am sure you will realise I cannot do this alone and will be needing lots of helpers so if you think you can spare some time during that week to help I would be eternally grateful. This will be like a "mini" connect day with those in need being able to connect to various organisations that can help them and they will also be able to get some beautiful gifts for their loved ones at Xmas.

Please if you can help in any way,or spread the word of what we are trying to do and get other people involved that would be great. If someone just donates 1 toy and they tell someone else and they also donate a toy or a gifty type of thing then it becomes a snowball effect.  Xmas is such a special time for us all and I really hate to think of people missing out.

I will be organising a meeting of sorts so anyone interested can come and listen to the ideas I have and can have some input into how they think we could run this effectively.  Keep an eye on this blog for more news of that meeting date or email me your interest in helping at

Thank you so much for all your support!!

Toys and even more toys ....

Sam's Warehouse had a wool sale this week and as we all know I AM a woolaholic!!  So I took myself off there and got some new wool. I had to!!! It was new and it was sitting there so lonely on the shelf .... I swear I am going to start a Woolaholics Anonymous any day now LOL

Anyway while I was there I went to take a look around at the toy section and boy did I hit the jackpot! Everything was on sale and really cheap so I had a spend up ready for Xmas. I got all of these toys for under $40!!

I have also finished knitting 10 toys ....

The ones in front are hand puppets!! Easy to make but look cute ...

I have some special news about Xmas and what we are planning that I will let you all in on next week when I have firmed everything up!!!

OK I went a little crazy .....

While I was searching around for a Bananas in Pyjamas pattern someone told me about a book site in the UK called "The Book Depository" so off I went and checked out their website. They had some amazing toy pattern books so I ordered a couple and then went back the next day and ordered a couple more and then the next day .. and so on and so on ... well here is a picture of the end result now they have all arrived

So as you can see I am now a little spoilt for choice!! LOL  This month (August) I am going to try and make 30 toys in 30 days!! So stay tuned and I will keep you updated as to whether I do it or not.

I had a phone call from Anglicare who had a wellbeing team who were teaching some teenage and ealy 20's girls how to use proper hygiene and they asked me if we could supply some hygiene packs (toiletry bags) So I scouted around and made up the 10 they needed with toothpaste and toothbrush, soap and face washer, hair shampp, deodorant, tissues and some body lotion. I found some toiletry bags on sale at a $2 shop so bouth them and filled them up. Here is the picture ...

If you are going away on holidays and staying in a motel don't forget to pick up the little bottles of shampoo and soaps as they always come in handy!!

The power of the Internet ...

Just last week I was desperate for a copy of a Bananas in Pyjamas knitted pattern so I posted on my blog about it .... that very night I found in my email a link to the book on ebay so very promptly bought it (Thanks Erica) and the next morning my phone rang and it was Anna who had been over and told me to blog about it saying she had reserved a copy from her library and would take a copy and send it to me. GREAT!! Now I can share the pattern with others .... In the next couple of days I have had 7 offers of copies from people who had read about my want of this pattern and it made me realise that the power of the internet is amazing. People like to share things and their knowledge and I think the internet brings us all a little closer together. I know I have made a lot of "internet friends" through Needy Stitches, we share stories of what is going on in our lives, what we are working on and what we are hopingto make in the near future. I know their husbands names, their kids names and quite often their grandchildren's names.

Gee can't you tell I am getting old with my amazement of modern technology, a technology thatkids take for granted has been around forever except in the "olden days" (And you wonder why I feelold LOL)

Friday, July 20, 2012

I have been searching and searching for a "Bananas in Pyjamas" knitted doll pattern for ages and just cannot find one. The other day Margie and Anna were over dropping off some things and I mentioned to them how frustrated I was with being unable to find this pattern and they suggested I ask if anyone has one in my blog. Ever have one of those "senior moments" where you think 'now why didn't I think of that DOH!!'

So here I am .... if you have this pattern could you please, please, pretty please send me a copy???

On another note instead of posting the pictures of the blankets on the website I have decided to open a blog just for the blankets. To post on the Needy Stitches website it would use up a LOT of space but on the blog it is part of the blog (if that makes sense)  The web address is  so go and check out pics of some gorgeous blankets that are already warming someone.

Baby Bundles & Wrappings

Sometimes I think it is much nicer to receive a "gift" rather than a "handout" so we usually go to the extra work and wrap up items that we donate to the needy.

One of the most popular things we do is make up baby bundles with items sent to me from our very generous members. A baby bundle often consists of a blanket from someone in Melboune, a jacket from Sydney, a beanie or bootees from Perth .. you get the idea lol  So keep those baby things coming!!

We also wrap up some toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and face washer, shampoo and conditioner. We do also make up toiletry bags but they are hard to come by at times. Not everyone likes making them and with the quantities we need we have to improvise.

Anyway I thought I would take some pictures of some items we recently donated so you can see what wedo and how we do it. I am very lucky that one of our members who does not knit likes to wrap presents so she usually gets the job of doing them. Trust me it must take her ages as sometimes she leaves here with a boot full of things and returns with a car load of wrapped items.

Enough of my babble .. here are the pictures

Blankets For All

It is REALLY cold here in Melbourne and according to the news it is cold almost everywhere so I got to thinking that everyone deserves at least a blanket!! Imagine sleeping rough without even a blanket to at least keep you a little warmer. I have come up with an idea! I have set a target of 150 single or larger size blankets for us to knit or crochet or quilt to give to those less fortunate. It is a way for us to use our 'crafty' skills to help keep someone warm.  If you crochet and just want to make squares do 6 rounds of any colour and then 1 round of black and send them to me and I will sew them up. It would be pretty cool to have a blanket or blankets made up of granny squares made by various members of Needy Stitches. The same would go for knitted squares. Cast on 50 stitches and knit til it is a square, send it to me and I will sew them up. Of course if you are in a sewing mood you could sew them together and send a completed blanket!! So let's get going on those squares and each blanket I get I will post a picture on the website and we can count them down til we have the target 150 completed!
Go to and see the blankets we have created

A Man's Jumper finished!

I have finally finished a Man's jumper that I started a couple of weeks ago!! The picture makes it look different shades of gray but I think that is just the lighting or the flash of the camera maybe. I had forgotten how long it takes to make a jumper, especially a man's one but men always seem to be left out a little.

I also got a big box of goodies from Heather, Blanche and Pat from Knitting Natters in Rosebud this morning.
Lots of beanies, scarves and kids jumpers! Thank you so much ladies!!

We have taken on a new project. Bendigo Bank have asked us to make squares and completed blankets for their blankets for all appeal. It will be widely advertised so will be an opportunity to get some publicity for Needy Stitches and hopefully attract some new members. So get those knitting needles clicking and clacking away. I will be happy to sew up the squares into finished blankets if it makes it easier. If you crochet squares can you do five rounds in any colour and then a final round in black please. It makes it easier for me to sew up. Those of you who knit bigger squares are better as it makes it easier also and less squares needed as the blankets have to be single size bed at least.

I feel a little like I am repeating myself but thank you all so much for everything that you do. It is very much appreciated!!
