Well finally I have made a Bananas in Pyjamas (actually I have made 3). I cannot believe how easy the pattern was and from all accounts these are very popular with kids.
I am hoping to make up some care packages for kids going into foster care with a back pack, a stationary pack. some toiletries, pyjamas, a beanie and a toy. Something that they can call their own as they go to a new place for awhile.
Lots of other news. With winter (and it is freezing here in Melbourne) the demand for all types of winter clothing is huge. Blankets and more blankets are needed also. I think just this week we gave out over 100 beanies and early July there is a new food van starting up that we are hoping to give blankets, beanies and scarves to.
And just as a side note ... My grandbaby is due in 8 days!!!!!!!!! Can you tell I am excited?? LOL
As you can see I have been knitting bootees. I think I became obsessed and just kept going and going on the 'normal' typoe and then I saw a pic in a magazine of these little ... what they call .... Mary Jane Bootees. They are made to look like shoes and socks and knit up quickly and look so cute. So these are my new passion. We still need more bootees so if you want a quick fix of knitting feel free to make any kind and any colour.
It is bitterly cold here in Melbourne so as usual we are very busy. I have very little "stock" left after giving out all the beanies, carves and mittens as well as blankets. Please help me restore at least some chaos in my house. I feel lost living in a house with corners not filled with boxes and things LOL
I hope everyone is well and your families are doing well. Love and hugs go out to Kym and her daughter and prayers that all go well. Also a big hug to Margie (she knows why)
Well once again it has been awhile. Things have been not only super busy but hectic.
The Connect Day went off really well. It was the first one held outside of Melbourne and in a suburb and considering that it was a huge success,. That and the fact it was all pulled together in around 3 months. The clients who came through were not only very thankful but also received a lot of needed help and information on where to go to receive more specialised help.
Now we move on .........
With this freezing weather and .. I am guessing ... the harder economic times the need is constantly growing. People are struggling to feed and clothe their kids, themselves and to keep a roof over their heads. I ger parcels every day with things you wonderful people have made or bought for me to give out but it is basically what comes in goes out with a couple of days. I was thinking just the other day how I was always complaining about my house being filled up with boxes and boxes of things yet now I wish it was filled up again with an abundance of things that are needed.
I get constant emails from people asking me what we need most so here is a list
Toiletries (any size, even the ones you get in motels when on holidays)
Baby clothes (matiness jackets, beanies really anything at all)
Another BIG thing is knitted bootees and socks for babies (This I cannot keep up with the demand)
Socks and underwear from kids sizes to adult
Stationary (pencils, coloured pencils, erasers, sharpereners, rulers, pens etc) to make up school packs)
Blankets from baby to bed size (or squares, I am happy to sew them up)
wool (I give out a lot of wool to retirement and nursing homes so the elderly ladies can keep their hands busy knitting and crocheting)
Clothing/Jumpers etc for kids sizes 2-12 Actually jumpers to fit any size from 0-100 LOL
The other thing I need is someone who can crochet around face washers. I am hopeless at this (not sure why) so if anyone out there can crochet an edge around face washers I would be very grateful. I have some gorgeous cotton to crochet with so I would be happy to send it to you.
Phew ... I did warn you that things were hectic LOL If you know anyone that can help create some things please, please tell them about us so I can at least attempt to keep up with the demand.
Take care and I hope you are all keeping warm .. Until next time (Which I will attempt to make it soon) keep those needles clicking away
I hope you all had a wonderful Easter!!! Mine was good as I had a bit of time to catch up on some much needed sleep and do not much else except crochet squares for a blanket.
The Homeless Connect day is on April 17th so things have been really hectic. My house looks like the local post office with bags and boxes and even a couple of suitcases piled up in the lounge room. I cannot believe some of the things that you all have made. One lady made some gorgeous knitted slippers in a pattern I have never seen before so I have sat down and stared at them for over an hour trying to work out how they are made. (gee you would think I had better things to do with my time wouldn't you?) We have also gotten lots of beanies, scarves, wrist warmers and blankets which is fantastic. We have also received a LOT of toiletries, both full sized and the ones you get from hotels when travelling. Also the local Church's Youth Group are also putting some together for us so I think we could almost make our goal of 200 toiletry bags.
Of course even though this event will help it is just a tip of the iceberg so keep those needles clacking away. Ohhhhh I got some gorgeous knitted toys today, a couple of them were the Jean Greenhowe dolls and so beautifully knitted. So don 't forget that we will need toys for Xmas so anything you can make would be greatly appreciated, I still cannot believe it is April already so trust me when I say Xmas will be upon us very soon.
Take care all of you and with any luck I will blog again soon.
Once again it feels like ages since I have blogged but there is a lot going on!
First the Homeless Connect day being held in Frankston on April 17th. The flyers have gone out and there has been a good response so they are expecting a lot of people to attend. We have already donated loads of beanies, scarves, blankets and toiletries. We are still working on toiletry bags so if you have any to spare we can use them! One of our members Carole made up close to 100 toiletry bags so we are busy trying to fill them with toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant and a brush or comb. To buy the things to fill 1 toiletry bag costs around $5 - $6.
Last week I met a couple of Outreach Workers who work on the streets with teenagers, The work they do is AMAZING! They have just gotten a house that they are turning into a kind of homeless shelter for kids but of course desperately need furniture and things to furnish it. They need single bed sheets, blankets and doonas, absolutely everything for the kitchen and basically anything that is useful in furnishing a house.
With winter fast approaching and the days and nights getting colder we need the usual things. Beanies, Scarves, Blankets and jumpers etc. We also need baby clothes, this seems a never ending demand.
You know you always feel warmer when you have those knitting needles or crochet hooks going LOL
I have been invited to join the committee for the Connect Day to be held in Frankston on April 17th. I went to the first committee meeting on Monday and it is really exciting though also a little daunting. The Connect day are expecting (or limiting) 500 homeless people to attend so as you can imagine there is a lot to do in a short time. This is the first Connect day being held in Frankston and while we have been involved in the Melbourne Connect Day this is the frist of hopefully many of these days being held along bayside.
What we desperately need is the usual items ... beanies, scarves, wrist warmers, jumpers, blankets AND toiletries. Along with the church who helkped us with the Reaching Out Day I am hoping we can donate 200 filled toiletry bags and as many beanies, scarves etc as possible. So get those needles clicking away PLEASE!!!
We also have a huge demand for baby clothes (babies never stop coming LOL) and kids clothing. The demand seems to be growing more and more and after the Reaching Out day we had last November I am being approached by more and more people in need. So please keep knitting, sewing, donating, so we can continue helping those less fortunate.
Just on another note we have a member of Needy Stitches called Margaret who is very ill. She makes tons (and I literally mean tons) of premmie beanie and bootee sets and along with her daughter Margie has been a huge supporter of Needy Stitches almost from the start. If you are religious please say aprayer for her or if not spare a thought for her.
We have sent a load of things down to Tasmnaia to help the bushfire victims and I am currently putting together things to send to rural NSW to help the flood victims.
As you can probably tell things are hectic and I really do try and blog but the days just seem to pass by but I will try harder even if they are short blogs.
Thank you to all of you who support Needy Stitches, there are so many people who appreciate you!!
Well I have finally found some time (and am not too tired to do something) to blog about what we are up to.
2013 is shaping up to be bigger with more charities in demand of items to help those less fortunate. I have already had calls asking for winter things, beanies, scarves, wrist warmers, jumpers and the never ending supply of baby clothing and blankets! Sometimes the demand seems limitless as more and more people find themselves in need of some help. So if you are in the mood for knitting you have a long list of things to choose from. Basically anything!!!
I am knitting some toys at the moment as they also seem to be in constant need. I heard about an organisation that deals with foster kids and learnt that when they enter foster care they very often come with nothing. So i am making up "care packages" with some toiletries, brush and comb and a toy to breing them some comfort. I am not that good at making toys but with practice I am getting better (especially with the faces, they no longer have the face of a deranged monster LOL)
The other thing I have found is a need for dolls clothing, barbie clothes and also baby doll sizes. I have a source where I can get the dolls cheap enough so I dress them and make extra set of clothing for little kids to play and dress them. I will try and take pictures of somesoon so you can see how they turn out.
I will be doing the same thing this year of keeping back items for a "Reaching Out" week late in November as it was a real success. We, as a group, made a BIG impact on so many lives. Many kids received gifts from Santa through us that they would not have gotten had we not been able to help, so keep up the good work!! It would be great if we could eventually work up to doing 2 a year, one a Xmas in July where we could concentrate on winter things as well as toys and thenormalon at Xmas (Something to think about)
Also to those who send me stamps .. a BIG thank you!! I have no idea of the number of stamps we have donated but I seem to be constantly taking bags of stamps. Please keep them coming.
Once again a big THANK YOU to those who support Needy Stitches and knit, crochet and sew for us to be able to keep up this work and at least make some kind of dent in the need of things!!!
